Description
Chasmfiends are slug-like demons, their bloated, mucous-covered bodies pulsating with an unnatural, sickly glow. Their skin is translucent, revealing shifting shadows and dark veins coursing with ichor. They move by undulating their grotesque, segmented forms, leaving a trail of acidic slime in their wake.
These fiends have jagged, lamprey-like mouths lined with rows of needle-sharp teeth, and their bodies are adorned with fleshy, tentacle-like protrusions that flail erratically. They exude an aura of rot and decay, and their presence alone seems to sap the vitality from the air.
Despite their slow movement, Chasmfiends are relentless in their pursuit of prey, driven by the corruptive will of the Vorrithan.
Behavior
Chasmfiends are relentless, single-minded creatures that exist solely to corrupt and consume. They are not fast movers but make up for it with their unyielding determination to pursue prey. Once they set their sights on a target, they will follow it with a dreadful persistence, undeterred by obstacles or danger.
These fiends are driven by an innate connection to the Vorrithan, often acting as its minions or harbingers of its coming. In battle, Chasmfiends are opportunistic and cruel, using their acidic slime trails to trap or slow fleeing prey. Their tentacle-like appendages lash out unpredictably, making them dangerous even to experienced adventurers.
When not actively hunting or under the command of the Vorrithan, Chasmfiends prefer to linger in areas of decay and rot, basking in the corruption they spread. They are drawn to locations already steeped in darkness, where their presence exacerbates the destruction.
Habitat
Chasmfiends dwell in the foulest corners of the Abyss, where the air is thick with decay and the ground is littered with the remains of lesser fiends. These regions, known as the Rotting Blightlands, are teeming with toxic pools, jagged obsidian ridges, and pulsating fungal growths that exude a noxious haze.
On the Material Plane, Chasmfiends are most often encountered in areas corrupted by Abyssal influence—abandoned battlefields, desecrated temples, or swamps tainted by dark magic. Their acidic slime transforms the environment around them, leaving once-thriving landscapes as lifeless, fetid wastelands.
Some Chasmfiends are summoned to serve dark sorcerers or fiendish cults. However, their corrosive nature and inability to distinguish friend from foe often lead to the destruction of those foolish enough to summon them.
