The Archons

Origins and Nature: The Archons are ancient, celestial beings believed to be the first inhabitants of Nathakra, predating all other races and civilizations. Ascended beyond the need for physical bodies, they exist as entities of pure energy and consciousness. The Archons are the embodiment of neutrality, dedicated to maintaining the delicate balance between the forces of light and darkness that govern the world. Though their original forms are unknown and have never been seen, they are said to possess a profound and incomprehensible beauty that reflects their transcendent nature. When they choose to manifest, they may take any form they desire, often appearing as radiant beings of light or as the very elements of nature.

Role in the World: The Archons see themselves as the custodians of balance, ensuring that neither light nor darkness gains supremacy. However, due to the inherent nature of evil, which seeks to consume and destroy, the Archons often find themselves aiding the forces of light to preserve the world’s equilibrium. They are not beings of judgment or morality but rather arbiters of cosmic harmony, intervening only when the balance is severely threatened.

Archonis and the Great Binding: Archonis, the most powerful and wise of the Archons, is revered among his kind for his selfless act during the Great Binding. When the forces of darkness threatened to overrun Nathakra, Archonis sacrificed himself to seal the doorway to the underworld, creating the Infernal Scar—a permanent wound on the land that serves as a reminder of his great deed. This act of sacrifice not only prevented the Lord of the Underworld, Noxarion, from returning to the corporeal world but also marked the beginning of the Archons’ decline. With their leader gone and their numbers dwindling, the Archons retreated from the world, becoming increasingly elusive.

The Archons Today: In the aftermath of the Great War and the cataclysmic events that followed, the Archons have become a rare and almost mythical presence in Nathakra. Their numbers are now nearly extinct, and they are seldom seen by mortal beings. When they do appear, it is only during times of great need, when the balance of the world hangs by a thread. Their tower, a majestic structure of ethereal design, stands on the Isle of the Archon at the center of Nathakra. It is a place of mystery and power, where the few remaining Archons gather to meditate, observe, and occasionally influence the events of the world.

Hierarchy and Society: The Archons do not adhere to a rigid social hierarchy as mortal beings do. Instead, they are guided by a collective consciousness, where wisdom, experience, and purpose determine their influence within their society. Archonis was the de facto leader due to his unparalleled wisdom and strength, but since his sacrifice, the remaining Archons function as a council, each contributing their unique perspectives to the collective. While they once numbered in the hundreds, only a handful remain, their presence more symbolic than active.

Language and Communication: The Archons possess an innate understanding of every language spoken in Nathakra. They communicate telepathically, allowing them to converse with any being regardless of language barriers. When they do speak, their voices resonate with an otherworldly quality, echoing with the power of ancient knowledge and universal truth.

Current Influence: Though their direct influence has waned, the Archons’ legacy continues to shape Nathakra. Legends of their deeds inspire the forces of light, and their rare appearances are seen as omens of significant events. The Isle of the Archon remains a place of pilgrimage for those seeking wisdom, guidance, or a glimpse of the last of Nathakra’s first protectors.
