Overview of the Planes of Existence

The Planes of Existence

The cosmos of Nathakra extends far beyond the world mortals call home. Though most lives unfold entirely within the Material Plane, countless other realms exist beyond mortal perception, each serving a unique purpose within the balance of creation.

These planes were brought into existence by the Old Gods during the Dawn of Creation, alongside the Divine Law itself. Woven into the very fabric of reality, the Divine Law binds every plane together, preserving the balance between life and death, light and shadow, order and chaos. Even the Gods themselves remain subject to its eternal decree.

Travel between the planes is exceedingly rare. Powerful magic, ancient relics, divine intervention, or naturally occurring planar rifts may allow passage, but such journeys are dangerous, unpredictable, and often irreversible.

The Material Plane

The Material Plane is the physical world where Nathakra exists. It is the realm of mountains and oceans, kingdoms and civilizations, where history is written and the choices of mortals shape the future. While countless magical forces influence the world, the Material Plane remains the crossroads upon which the fate of all creation ultimately rests.

The Heavens

The Heavens are the radiant home of the New Gods and their celestial servants. From this divine realm, the Gods watch over Nathakra and guide creation from afar, though their actions are forever limited by the Divine Law. It is a realm of light, order, and eternal purpose.

The Underworld

Created after the Great Timequake introduced mortality into creation, the Underworld became the final destination of every mortal soul. Originally conceived as a sacred realm where souls completed their final journey in peace, it later fell under the dominion of Malachi, whose corruption transformed portions of the realm into places of fear and torment. Deep within its darkest reaches lies the Tenebrous Abyss, where Malachi’s influence is strongest.

The Shadow Realm

The Shadow Realm exists alongside the Material Plane as a realm of darkness, dreams, nightmares, and illusion. Though not inherently evil, it is a place where fear and shadow naturally gather, making it perilous for those who venture too deeply. Over countless ages, Nyxara came to claim this mysterious realm as her own, shaping much of its character through her growing influence.

The Fey Nexus

At the heart of the four great Elemental Planes lies the Fey Nexus, also known as the Feywild. It is not itself an elemental plane, but the living convergence where the boundless energies of Fire, Water, Earth, and Air exist in perfect equilibrium. From this timeless realm flows the primal magic of nature itself.

Vast magical leylines carry this energy into the Material Plane, nourishing every forest, mountain, river, ocean, and living creature. The Fey Nexus is therefore not merely a place of magic, but the very source from which Nathakra’s natural balance is sustained.

The Four Elemental Planes

Surrounding the Fey Nexus are the four primordial Elemental Planes.

  • The Plane of Fire, a realm of endless flame and volcanic fury.
  • The Plane of Water, an infinite expanse of oceans, rivers, and shifting currents.
  • The Plane of Earth, a domain of stone, crystal, and mountain kingdoms.
  • The Plane of Air, a boundless sky of winds, storms, and floating realms.

These ancient planes embody the pure essence of their respective elements. Where their infinite energies converge, the Fey Nexus is formed, and through it, the magic of nature flows into Nathakra.

The Void Realm

Little is known of the Void Realm.

Unlike the other planes, it appears disconnected from the natural order established during creation. Ancient texts speak of it only in whispers, describing an endless emptiness that exists beyond the boundaries of the known cosmos. Whether these accounts are truth, myth, or misunderstood prophecy remains uncertain.

Even the oldest scholars of Nathakra possess little reliable knowledge of the Void, and many believe some mysteries are best left undisturbed.
